NEWSLETTER No 1

20 August 2012

After the very successful International Conference of the Anatomical Society of West Africa in Jos 26-28 July 2012 which was attended by the President himself, Professor Cliff Tagoe, immediate Past Vice Chancellor of the University of Ghana, Legon, young anatomists came together at the Department of Anatomy University of Jos to request for the establishment of a non-political, non-partisan and non discriminatory International Anatomical Society  that will take interest of all international bodies and societies into consideration. This is taken cognizance of the fact that Human anatomy as a bona fide scientific subject is disappearing from the world scene because of the paucity of anatomists and also auxillary anatomists  and also the disappearance of cadavers for dissection of the human body, not only in the curriculum of medical students but also in advanced courses for would-be anatomists in developed countries. Hence our envisaged society will promote advancement of Human anatomy using scientific means and will include amongst its membership, laypersons who have considerable interest in human anatomy and with a  keen support for dissection of the human body (as in those who wish to donate their bodies after death for dissection) and methods which promote or mimic it.

The above was informed by the realization that although presently most of the advancement in Human anatomy have come from the developed countries of  Europe and North America, Africa can also contribute to the development of the science of human anatomy since a simple survey showed clearly that most African medical schools are still able to dissect human body in learning their anatomy while the art has been abrogated in most European countries because of paucity. Hence it is possible to, amongst other things, allow exchange of opportunities in which African would-be anatomists can benefit from facilities in advanced laboratories in Europe and North America in advance training while those in Europe can come to Africa to dissect the human body. Also interesting Electronic means of dissection is to be encouraged world wide. Human Anatomy began in the renaissance as the science subject that changed forever naturalistic medicine and grave side dissections assisted in no small measure in this feat. We cannot abandon dissections now even though we now have non invasive methods of probing into human anatomy without necessarily dissecting it, such as some modern imaging devices like as MRI and PET, and the prospects of particle physics producing even more intensive imaging methods, for they are still but Childs play compared to actual dissections!

To this end a meeting was held on 6 August 2012 to inaugurate the society comprising of the following individuals.

Dr E.S. Mador

Dr H. Goncim

Dr Yohanna M. Usman

Dr Manyl A. Wazhi

Dr Cecilia Dafiel

Dr Hadley P. Ikwe

Dr J.C. Nyam

Dr C.B. Uzokwe

Dr Francis Shinku

Dr Zitta Nden

Prof Oluwole Ogunranti (Presiding)

A document was produced as a forerunner of its constitution and Professor Oluwole Ogunranti was appointed its first President. Hajiya Fathia Shuaibu, the former First Lady of Plateau State and a Life Member of ASWA since 1997 who is a layperson but with keen interest in Human Anatomy, was appointed its first Matron. Here we quote verbatim et literatim the ISAHA DOCUMENT produced at Jos for your information.

FIRST EVER AFRICAN INTERNATIONAL TRAINING WORKSHOP

Some workshop participants- 27 July 2012

International Training Workshop on Electronic Anatomy & Medicine August 26-27 at JOS, NIGERIA

Africa has never mounted a global training  workshop within its borders. This is the first of its kind in the African soil and it was very successful workshop which was held in Jos University Computer Center. Training was provided for about 70 medical and anatomy students on the use of electronic means to dissect the human body and also to learn human anatomy and medicine. The participants came  from mostly the North of Nigeria, with a few coming from the south. Check on internet, the WORKSHOP Document. http://www.hamj.org/workshop.mht . All participants received at least five items FREE, courtesy of the two website hosts that sponsored the ASWA Conference of July as follows

ü  Human Anatomy Museum, www.hamj.org

ü  Electronic School of Medicine  www.oluwoleogunranti.com

The FREE items are as follows

1.      Computerized Pocket Anatomy, anatomy Bible, mini- Electronic Book

2.      One book from the list of computerized Practical manuals/ workbooks written by Oluwole Ogunranti and published by the Electronic School of Medicine on the World Wide Web from Histology, Embryology, Gross Anatomy, Osteology, Living Anatomy, Neuroanatomy and finally Medicine.

3.      Human Anatomy Museum CD-ROM

4.      Electronic School of Medicine CD-ROM

5.      Osteology Tutorial CD ROM

In view of the success this workshop had, other workshops of this kind is expected to be mounted by ISAHA all over world from time to time to encourage the study of Human anatomy and its electronic methods of learning. The website for ISAHA and the major website for the study of Human dissections both electronic and real time, is the Human Anatomy Museum at www.hamj.org which contains dissections of the human body to include all layers and bones and muscles.

INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE OF THE ANATOMICAL SOCIETY OF WEST AFRICA JOS, JULY 2012    http://www.hamj.org/11aswa.htm

This conference was very successful. A guest lecture was delivered by Dr Ibrahim Wada, the famed pioneer in vitro fertilizationist in Africa who trained in Cambridge, UK. It was attended by many people and it was a very exciting time.

The Chairperson of the Local Organising Committee, Professor Oluwole Ogunranti in promoting what he called ‘Three Dimensional Learning’ launched 10 Electronic Books books as follows.

These books are to be used by ISAHA as a means of propagating its ideas and ideals about studying human anatomy with dissections, (virtual or physical) of the human body

  1. Computerized Histology Practical, 242 pp
  2. Computerized Embryology Practical, 139 pp
  3. Computerized Gross Museum Anatomy Practical, 350 pp
  4. Computerized Living anatomy Practical, 105 pp
  5. Computerized Neuroanatomy Practical, 140 pp
  6. Computerized Osteology Practical, 313 pp
  7. Computerized Medicine Practical, 320 pp

Other books include

  1. Sexual Hygiene, 208 pp
  2. Degree Anatomy- textbook for advanced students, 1042 pp
  3. Computerized Pocket Anatomy, 248 pp

These books are electronic Books which have both hard copy (which is the literature) and the electronic which has all its links and is placed on CD-ROMs for use on internet enabled computer systems where they have stupendous access to internet files mainly at the Electronic School of Medicine on the World Wide Web. They can be used as workbooks for practicals in practical or laboratory schedules and classes with or without the help of an instructor whose pages are also prescribed for maximum training of the student. They can be submitted for grading after the class electronically (email) or manually. They are therefore the ideal for ISAHA proposed Human anatomy enhancement, for an Electronic Book (CD) can have links to a million books and therefore be a moving library.

All the above books can be accessed on internet  at Electronic School of Medicine Publications  www.oluwoleogunranti.com/esmpub.htm They have reviews on internet which you can check on www.oluwoleogunranti.com/esmpubreviews.htm

Expect more ISAHA Newsletters from time to time to provide information about advancement of Human anatomy world wide and also information in the world of anatomy
